Camp Verde hosts Arizona’s most recently designated Important Bird Area (IBA), marking the third IBA within the world-renowned Verde Valley. A joint effort between Friends of the Verde River, Northern Arizona Audubon Society, and the Town of Camp Verde made the designation a reality. Residents voted to prioritize the designation in their town’s planning process, and hundreds of hours were committed by volunteers to conduct bird surveys and apply GIS mapping needed for the IBA application.
The Verde River is one of our state’s last perpetual flowing rivers, and supports a diversity of bird life, including the Western Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Lucy’s Warbler, and Bell’s Vireo. The IBA designation confirms not only the river’s importance to birds and other wildlife, but also its economic, recreational, and cultural importance to our state.
