Rafting Along Andrews Bay Do you know where to find mudhens? Mudhens, a nickname for the American Coot, can be found year-round in the Seattle area but their numbers increase during the winter months. They can be found huddled together in large groups that sometimes exceed one thousand in number. As they float along the water, coots are so tightly packed together that they resemble a raft adrift on gentle waves, hence the term “a raft of coots." You can find rafts of coots right now on Andrews Bay or slightly further north near Ohler Island. Just look for small black and gray birds with white bills with a large number of family and friends.

Thanksgiving Weekend Closure The Seward Park Audubon Center will be closed Saturday, November 27, and Sunday, November 28 for the Thanksgiving holiday. We hope you will find time during this weekend to enjoy the outdoors, and maybe introduce yourself to a bird. If you choose to stay indoors, please consider ordering a puzzle this weekend. You can order puzzles and more in our online store for curbside pick-up this Saturday or Sunday.

Guided Nature Walk | Finding Fungi: Mushroom Foray Saturday, November 20, 2021 1:00 – 3:30 PM or,  Sunday, November 21, 2021 1:00 – 3:30 PM Free Advance Registration Required Mushroom season continues!  With the recent rains, our meadows and forests are sprouting a variety of mushrooms; Boletes, Turkey Tails, and Shaggy Manes, and Witch's Butter add color and interest to our park and provide clues to the fungi just beneath the forest floor.  This fungal connectivity is integral to the health and diversity of our forest.  Join Lead naturalist Ed Dominguez as we explore this fascinating world of mushrooms on a tour of Seward Park. The Lazy Bird Wednesday, November 24, 2021 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Free Advance Registration Required Go ahead, have that second cup of coffee, we'll wait. Join us in Seward Park for a survey of our birds sailing across the sky, perched in our trees, and paddling on the water. Meditation Nature Walk Sunday, December 19, 2021 9:00 AM - 11:15 AM Free Advance Registration Required Tune your awareness to the natural world of Seward Park's ancient forest, sky, and shore. Find peace and rejuvenation on a guided meditation walk with Kimberly Bowen, meditation and martial arts teacher and former staff at Seward Park Audubon Center. Modest pace, up to 2 miles including some stairs. Older children who can maintain silence may join with their adults. No pets, please. Learn more and register

Hannah Salia | Illumination - Paintings and Poetry From the Forest Gallery Exhibit Through December 12 Inspired by the beautiful coastal landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, artist Hannah Salia's paintings focus on the interplay of color and light through the forest and how these illuminated moments can renew the spirit.  Finding new creative synergies in pairing her paintings with her haiku poetry, Ms. Salia recently published "Illumination - Paintings and Poetry From the Forest," a book featuring these collected works. The show  ‘Illumination’ will feature paintings and poems in the Garry Oak Gallery from September 19 through December 12.
