Hummingbird Activity Makes Festival a Hit
The flurry of activity in and around the Hummingbird Forrest kept guests of all ages engaged throughout the three-day Hummingbird Festival at the Pascagoula River Audubon Center.

Fall Hummingbird Migration was in full swing for this year’s festival and provided a great setting for entertainment and educational experiences for the more than 700 guests in attendance. Along with the hum of the birds, Banding Coalition of the Americas was capturing, banding and releasing hummingbirds and the Audubon Coastal Stewardship team was banding and releasing song birds. Guests were offered an opportunity to get an up-close look at nature through complimentary Go Sky binoculars and scopes, and Storyteller Fox Ellis was a big hit as always.

Finishing the third year at the Moss Point location, staff and volunteers are already making plans for the 2023 festival which is set for September 21, 22 and 23. This is the largest annual festival and fundraiser for PRAC, and support from all guests is appreciated.  Those who were not able to attend the festival can still make a difference through a Hummingbird Donation, no matter how big or how small.  Click HERE to make a donation. In the optional space, indicate this is a Hummingbird Festival donation.

A huge thanks goes to our premiere sponsor, Chevron Refinery along with other sponsorships from Geiger Promotional Products, The Lumberyard, Dr. Wayne and Vicki Adkison, Halter Marine, Scranton’s Restaurant and Omega Protein.

Hummingbirds Tanking Up to Fly South
Autumn temperatures, low humidity and a light breeze make the first weekend of October a great time to explore downtown Moss Point and Rhodes Bayou and to enjoy a final look at the buzz of Hummingbirds during 2022 fall migration.

PRAC will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, October 1 and 2, for guests to enjoy the hummingbirds before they migrate south.  All hummingbird festival t-shirts are discounted by 25 percent throughout the month of October.

Solange Ledweth is offering one-on-one glass blowing classes to create pumpkins throughout the weekend as well.  The sessions are filled, but observing her art in the making is FREE.  Make a plan to do some bird watching, kayaking, or just enjoying a day out doors at PRAC.

October Activities bring Life to Griffin Cemetery
Two weekends in a row, Historic Griffin Cemetery at the end of Dantzler Street will be filled with life with the annual Historic Griffin Cemetery Tour October 22 and the 2nd Annual Moss Point Witches and Warlocks Ride October 29.

This Historic Cemetery Tour is sponsored by the Jackson County Historic Society.  Presenters will represent their families that are interned at the cemetery and committee members will be wearing vintage attire.  The hour-long guided tours start every 30 minutes between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Portable restrooms will be available along with golf carts for guests who are unable to walk.

Parking and admission are both FREE, but donations are accepted to fund future events.

Moss Point Main Street and Audubon sponsor the Witches and Warlocks Ride that begins on Main Street and ends at Audubon.  The halloween parade travels south on Main Street to Bellview, and then west to Oakwood Street.  At Dantzler the parade travels left into Griffin Cemetery and around the oldest sections of the graveyard before emerging back on Dantzler and turning at Arthur to end at Audubon.  Prizes will be awarded for rides and costumes and snacks will be served.

Protect Migrating Birds with Window Decals
With fall migration underway, Audubon staff spoke to Camp Paws visitors at the Humane Society of South Mississippi about the challenges birds face during this north-south journey.

Not only do birds encounter bad weather, loss of stopover habitat, light and pesticide pollution, but one-billion birds die annually from window collisions. A simple solution we can use at home is to add window decals to decrease reflections and help the birds detect the glass.

Campers made their own beautiful window decals by tracing stencils with puff paint!

Bunco to Benefit Birds
Play Bunco! Have Fun! Raise Funds for PRAC!

The local chapter of American Business Women’s Association is hosting a charity bunco event, and funds raise will benefit the Pascagoula River Audubon Center and the National Alliance for Mental Illness.

The ABWA Charity Bunco will be October 24 at 5 p.m. at the Pascagoula Elks Lodge. The event features drinks, door prizes, silent auction, food and split the pot for an entry fee of $20 per person.  The game begins at 6:30.

Bunco is a dice game generally played with twelve or more players, divided into groups of four, trying to score points while taking turns rolling three dice in a series of six rounds. A bunco is achieved when a person rolls three-of-a-kind and all three numbers match the round number.
