Please Join Us for Jay Watch Training
This year, Jay Watch volunteers can choose to complete training in person or online. Two identical, in-person Jay Watch training sessions will be offered: May 13 at Lyonia Preserve and June 3 at Cross Florida Greenway Triangle. As an alternative (or in addition) you will be able to train by watching two online modules, Basic Ecology, and Survey Protocol. The videos provide good refresher information and cover the basic skills required to do surveys.

In-person training will take place in the field to optimize the opportunities to observe, practice protocol, and complete data sheets critical to good data entry.  If you plan to attend one of these sessions we highly recommend you watch online modules beforehand as this will better prepare you to process what you see in the field.

In-person training will begin at 8 a.m. to take advantage of the cool weather when the birds are most active. If you have questions, please email Jacqui Sulek. Otherwise, please click the button below to register for in-person training or to obtain online training information.

The online training modules cover both Florida Scrub-Jay Natural History and Audubon Jay Watch  Protocol Training.

Surveys take place annually between June 15 and July 15 and are coordinated by the land managers at their respective sites. Each site will conduct a survey for three consecutive days. Surveys run from sun up to late morning. New Jay Watchers will be assigned to a team with a leader. Standardized Jay Watch survey methods are employed statewide.  The survey schedule will be circulated in May.
