Fledglings: No, Nestlings: Go
Did You Know that you can help a nestling that has fallen to the ground? Contrary to the view that avian parents will reject a young bird that has been touched by human hands, it is acceptable to return a featherless or downy chick to the nest, if you can reach it. The treatment for fledglings is quite different. Fledglings are birds that have left the nest but are not yet skilled flyers. In this situation, leave the fledgling alone, it will make its way up to the safety of a tree…often under the parents’ watchful eyes. If the bird is in immediate danger (a cat, or an off-leash dog…) try to scare off the predator and protect the young bird.

Flush: The Remarkable Science of an Unlikely Treasure

In his book ‘Flush’ author Bryn Nelson surmises that the future is sh*t: the literal kind. For most of human history we’ve been, well, disinclined to take a closer look at our body’s natural product—the complex antihero of this story—save for gleaning some prophecy of our own health. But if we were to take more than a passing look at our poop, we would spy a veritable cornucopia of possibilities.

Join us at The Royal Room in Columbia City as microbiologist and nature author Bryn Nelson helps us digest the power of poop and details the opportunities a closer look at human feces can provide.

Bat Awareness Trends (BAT) Leader Training
Wednesday, June 7, 2023
8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Advance registration required

There is so much to learn about the bats that take to the skies in our area each night in our warmer months. Observation of bat activity is an important component in understanding our bat population. This summer, Seward Park Audubon Center, Woodland Park Zoo, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Bats Northwest are coming together for a bat study, and you can help. We are providing evening opportunities to participate in bat conservation through the Bat Activity Trends (BAT) program.

Right now, we are looking for several people to serve as leaders for our BAT community science program. Leaders will meet for an orientation and training session to learn how to train groups of volunteers on bat observation procedures.
