Restaurants in New Orleans Are Recycling Oyster Shells to Save Precious Coastline From PBS “For years, members of this Indigenous community felt helpless as they watched chunks of sacred land drop into the water. These structures, built by Native peoples and considered spiritual centers, are older than Stonehenge or the ancient pyramids in Egypt… To help protect the historic mounds, the Pointe-au-Chien Tribe partnered with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) in 2019 to use oyster shells recycled from local restaurants to build an artificial reef. It’s part of a broader effort to return shells to the sea through “living shorelines’ that help slow rising sea levels and erosion.” Read the entire article.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces $60 Million to Create a Climate Resilience Accelerator Program and Support Small Businesses Through 'Investing in America' Agenda From NOAA “Today, the Department of Commerce and NOAA are launching the Ocean-Based Climate Resilience Accelerators program, a $60 million investment in coastal resilience and American small businesses through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda. The program, funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, will foster public-private partnerships to help support small businesses that are developing sustainable technologies geared toward climate resilience to attract capital, mature their technologies and scale their business models for climate impact.” Read the entire article.

Gov. DeSantis Announces $300M for Flood Resilience Projects, $11.1M in Central Florida From News 6 Orlando “Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday announced $300 million in disbursements for the Statewide Flooding and Sea Level Rise Resilience Plan, funding more projects to address flooding and storm surge concerns in coastal and inland areas as hurricane season continues. The money’s going toward three previously awarded projects and to 71 new ones, with four located in Central Florida, DeSantis’ office said in a statement.” Read the entire article.
