Greetings Seward Park Audubon Summer Campers!

Camp Begins Wednesday!
Looking forward to sharing three days together looking at the forces that have shaped our landscape. We will meet each day at 10:00 am in the Garry Oak Room in the Audubon Center.

The Center will provide hot, cold, and iced beverages, but please bring your own lunch and snacks. Our kitchen has a refrigerator and microwave for your use. Dress to stay cool as we will have hot weather.

Parking can be challenging in the park, so plan on arriving early in case you need to search for a spot. Additionally, I you anticipate physical challenges that might arise, please email me so our team can help find solutions to overcome obstacles.

To whet your geological appetite, here is a brief outline of our schedule:

Wednesday: On Shaky Ground | Earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest
10:00 AM
Class begins. We will share an overview of Earth and why there is movement in our crust. A video presentation will illustrate the sources of earthquakes and tsunamis and we will take a stab at forecasting.

Noon
We break for lunch. 

12:30 PM 
We will walk approximately 1 mile to view a 25’ earthquake scarp in the Park.
2:00 pm Return to the Center, wrap up and final thoughts.

 
Thursday: Volcanic Hazards in the Cascade Range
10:00 AM 
We will examine the different types of volcanoes and the kind of eruptions they produce. The following video presentation will examine each major peak in the Cascades and the potential for future eruptions.

Noon
We break for lunch. 

12:30 PM
We will return outdoors to view Mt. Rainier from the Park and discuss its shape and construction.

2:00 PM
Conclusion back at the Center.

 
Friday: Ice Age Floods in the Pacific Northwest
10:00 AM
We will look at cycles of warming and cooling in our Earth’s history. With visuals, we will observe the advance and retreat of ice in our state and the tremendous floods that scoured the channeled scablands.

Noon
We break for lunch. 

12:30 PM
We will walk in the cool old-growth forest and look for glacial erratics deposited by tremendous sheets of ice.

2:00 PM
We will celebrate our week together and share thoughts and perspectives.
