Wood Stork nest site with no nests.

What's Up With Wood Storks? In the 2018 nesting season, 250 Wood Storks nested at the sanctuary. In 2019, only two chicks fledged. While Wood Storks have been seen foraging in the swamp and some nesting activity has been reported by research partners monitoring colony sites in Everglades National Park, there is still no sign that Wood Storks are nesting at Corkscrew or any other Southwest Florida colonies so far this year. Students enjoying the Insect Adventures program.

Second Graders in the House Corkscrew’s Second Grade Insect Adventure program is in full swing. Students learn about insects by traveling through stations that focus on specific concepts for insect habitat and physiology. After they “Build an Insect,” they walk down a dirt path to learn about antlions, complete a scavenger hunt, and learn about biodiversity by exploring the species that live in the pond. According to Education Intern AnnaFaith Jorgensen, “it's a great way for kids to become more comfortable with insects and creepy-crawly animals, and to get excited about learning.” Read more

A "romp" of otters on the Corkscrew Boardwalk.

Otterly Amazing! On Valentine's Day, Associate Director Shawn McCrohan was treated to a wonderful sight! A "romp," or group of River Otters, were playing along the boardwalk. This play actually teaches them survival skills and reinforces bonds. When they are in the water, a group of otters is a “raft.” The two-minute video, shared on our Facebook page, engaged hundreds of thousands of viewers.  Watch video on Facebook

Volunteer Update We already miss our former Volunteer Coordinator, Steve Parker, who has recently retired, but are excited to welcome our new Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, Kristina O’Hern! She is fluent in Spanish and has been a Florida resident for more than a decade. She is passionate about relationship building and working together to advance a common goal. Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary comprises 13,000 acres of sensitive land owned and protected by the National Audubon Society since 1954. Its renowned 2.25-mile boardwalk winds through the world's largest remaining bald cypress forest. Up until the early 1900's few people outside of southern Florida had ever heard of Corkscrew. The mission of Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is to protect the natural resources of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, its surrounding watershed, and the Western Everglades, and to influence Everglades restoration, for the benefit of birds, other wildlife and people through land management, science, education, restoration, and public policy advocacy.
