Friend,
The outdoors—and the joy of birds—should be safe and welcoming for all people.
However, the reality is that it isn’t yet. Black Americans often face terrible daily dangers in outdoor spaces, where they are subjected to unwarranted suspicion, confrontation, and violence.
A group of Black scientists, birders, and nature enthusiasts under the handle @BlackAFinSTEM released this statement, at the launch of a new movement, that we want to share with you here:
“Recent events have shed light on the obstacles and potential dangers Black people face while enjoying outdoor recreation. Nature is meant to be enjoyed by everyone. During Black Birders Week, we are uplifting birders and nature enthusiasts to show that diversity in outdoor recreation exists. Often, the lack of participation of Black people is attributed to disinterest, when racism and systemic barriers are underlying factors. We need allies to actively fight against racism and help make the outdoors safe for all.”
We are celebrating Black Birders Week, and invite you to join us.Help us make the outdoors for all, and let us know how we can do better. |
