Dear friend,

Coastal areas are a magnet for birds and people. Audubon New York is actively working to stabilize and increase populations of coastal birds and
reduce threats to their survival, but we need your help. With the Fourth of July holiday weekend coming up, we need to spread the word about how beach-goers can enjoy our coasts while protecting baby birds and nesting sites.

Birds like Piping Plovers, American Oystercatchers, and Least Terns are using Long Island’s beaches right now to raise their young. Many nesting bird sites are visibly posted and well-marked on New York beaches to protect them from human disturbance. Unfortunately, if beach-goers do enter posted areas, they may unintentionally cause the death of eggs or chicks.

Below is a list of ways that we can #SharetheShore with vulnerable shorebirds to help ensure their survival this beach season.

Threats to Beach-nesting Birds
  • Habitat loss due to human development

  • Disturbance from recreation

  • Dogs on the beach (especially off leash)

  • Feral & outdoor cats

  • Introduced & native predators

  • Trash left on the beach

  • Off-road vehicles

What You Can Do To Help

We would like to thank PSEG Long Island and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for supporting this program.
