A Letter to the Flock from Committee Chairman Robert Mills
On behalf of all the members of the local Pascagoula River Audubon Center Advisory Committee, I’d like to thank you for your continued support. The holidays are a good time to reflect on the past year, while more importantly, eyeing what’s next. I think it’s safe to say that in this unprecedented year, everyone is ready for what’s next. Like everyone else in the world, PRAC has faced unparalleled hardships this year. We’ve had to reduce staff at the site, shutter numerous events, and hit pause on all the great things planned for the Center in 2020. But everyone knows that story, and we aren’t the only ones telling it. I want to talk about What’s Next at PRAC and how you can help support us.

This holiday season there are great ways to come and safely enjoy the beauty of the Center. Saturday, December 5 is the Holiday Marketplace where several retail, craft, and food vendors will set up at the site. There will be great music performed by Great Speckled Birds, pictures with Santa, and painting and craft activities for children. We will also be providing curbside pickup for any of our online purchases. Of course, social distancing measures are in place, and mask usage around the 10-acre site is strongly encouraged.

As we begin planning for 2021, we are focused on providing environmental educational opportunities for the community and continue to update activities and exhibits for return visits.  We already have the Moss Point Fine Art Gallery booked through October, and we hope to have a springtime festival.

The Center is under the umbrella of the National Audubon Society, but we are a stand-alone facility, responsible for raising our own finances in order to keep our programs going and our doors open for you. All expenses are paid through local contributions and revenue generated through admissions, tuition, sales and rental of the facility. We understand it’s been a tough year, but we are encouraging previous and current donors to contribute to the future of PRAC. If you are unable to give this year, that’s okay! Please share your experiences of PRAC with others in person (distanced of course) and on social media. Help us grow our flock and realize the vision we have for the Pascagoula River Audubon Center.

Holiday Marketplace To Offer Shopping, Food and Entertainment
Visit PRAC and enjoy safe, socially distanced shopping around the 10-acre site for the 2020 Holiday Marketplace.  From the front gate to the trolley path behind the Center, vendors will be set up selling food, gift items, plants and other one-of-a-kind items that would be great for everyone on your Christmas list.

The gates open at 10 a.m., and admission is FREE.  Donations for entrance will be accepted and will go toward paying the entertainment.  Whisper of Hope will have a display on the front lawn featuring owls, snakes and other creatures of nature and “Great Speckled Birds” will be entertaining in the Perch.  The work of Sandra Eisler is on display and available for purchase in the Moss Point Fine Art Gallery.  Tay’s Barbeque will be selling food, and Burnham’s Fountain will be open for lunch as well.

Teresa Hatcher with Splatter Paint Parties will be on hand with wooden door and yard decorations that can be painted on site.  Small pieces will be $15 and larger pieces are $25.  PRAC also has several different native plants available for purchase including Holly and Beautyberry. The Hidden Heron Gift Shop has a large inventory of gift ideas, and a Holiday House table is available with inexpensive items for children’s shopping.

Santa Claus will be available for photographs in the Pergola in the Native Meadow with photographer Jennifer Hatfield.  Photos and a paper frame will be available for $5 and may be picked up after 2 p.m.

As with any event at PRAC, guests are reminded that social distancing is in place and masks are required when closer than six feet to another person or group or when entering the interpretative center.
Nature and New Year!

Kayaking is the best way to get a bird’s eye view of winter bayou residents, and on January 2, all kayak rentals are FREE!  From 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., guests will have one hour reservations to enjoy the beauty surrounding PRAC in one of 10 single kayaks or two tandem kayaks.  Reservation is encouraged.
