Dear Audubon Advocate,
Second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) are poisons that are set out as bait to kill pest rodents. Sadly, they are also known killers of raptors like owls and hawks, which eat the poisoned rodents and eventually suffer their own slow and painful deaths.
This week, we have a chance to help ban the sale and use of SGARs in Connecticut. House Bill No. 5217, "An Act Concerning the Use of Certain Rodenticides," has just been referred to the Appropriations Committee – and must go to a vote by Friday. Take action today! Birds need you to speak up for their health and safety.
House Bill No. 5217 establishes a ban on the sale and use of SGARs. Because rodents will continue to be a problem pest for humans, the bill includes a set of exemptions for situations that may impact public health, such as for protecting water supply infrastructure, or for agricultural activities, such as a food production site.
Urge the Appropriations Committee to favorably report out “An Act Concerning the Use of Certain Rodenticides.” They could vote any day before Friday, so now is your chance.
Rodenticides may not target birds, but our Bald Eagles, Coopers Hawks, and Great-Horned Owls don’t have a way of identifying sick from healthy prey. It’s up to us to protect them. |
