Gleaming like a ruby in an emerald sea, the scarlet rosemallow, Hibiscus coccineus, is a spectacular native species currently in bloom. Scarlet rosemallow is unmistakable because of its nearly eight-inch diameter flowers, each with five scarlet petals. This mallow is a relative of ornamental hibiscus shrubs and lives in several habitats, usually at the edges, where there is a combination of sun, shade, and seasonal flooding.
Look for scarlet rosemallow from early May to summer. Get tickets to visit the Sanctuary. |
