Save the Date: Help Monitor Light Pollution for Birds
Light pollution associated with development is rapidly increasing across the Salt Lake Valley. This poses a concern for two major bird migration routes that intersect the valley. You can help us monitor how light conditions for migrating birds are changing!

We’ve launched a community science program in partnership with Utah Valley University, Great Salt Lake Audubon, and DarkSky Utah. Our goal is to find trends and fill data gaps, but we need a team of volunteers to make it happen.

Volunteer Details:
  • Conduct two-hour surveys at night, four times per year.
  • No prior experience necessary.
  • Volunteers will work in pairs and will receive all necessary training.
Monitoring Window:
  • Monitoring will occur February 18–20 and 25-26.
  • Exact dates are dependent on weather and ideal monitoring conditions. We will announce the exact dates as we approach the window.
Winter Training Dates (in downtown Salt Lake City):
  • February 11th, 6-7:30 PM
  • February 12th, 2-3:30 PM
Each session is limited to 12 participants. Email Jacqueline Sundstrand to reserve your spot!

If you have participated with us before, you do not need to attend a training session, but you are welcome to join if you'd like a refresher. If you have never participated before, you must attend one of the training sessions. Please encourage others to sign up and get their friends and families involved in this important effort!

For questions or more information, please email Jacqueline Sundstrand or Chelsea Cameron.
