Spring into Action: Celebrating Community, Conservation, and Connection

Dear Friends, Supporters, Partners, and Community Members,

At the Audubon Center at Debs Park, we are deeply grateful for each and every one of you—however you identify yourself within our growing circle. Spring is a season of transformation, and this year, that spirit is blooming in every corner of our work.

As the landscape around us shifts and blooms, we’ve taken time to reflect on our journey: the milestones we’ve reached, the stories we’ve shared, and the community we’ve built together. While so much of our work happens in conversations – on the trails, in the nursery, or around a campfire – the numbers also tell a story.

A story of momentum, connection, and collective impact.

Let’s look at what we’ve accomplished together since July 2024:

Habitat Restoration & Conservation

With your support, our team and volunteers have been restoring ecosystems that support birds, pollinators, and people. Every hour, every weed pulled, every plant nurtured is a step toward a more resilient future.

  • 1,700 native plants installed across our projects — with 249 planted in March alone!

  • 489 volunteers have rolled up their sleeves to restore habitats, contributing a total of 1,728 hours of service.

  • 635 nursery plants were propagated and shared with the community through giveaways.

Youth Leading the Way

We’re proud to nurture the next generation of environmental stewards through hands-on learning and mentorship. Young people are not just preparing for the future — they are leading right now.

  • Nearly 3,000 hours contributed by youth to engage with the public, study our landscapes, and support our programs.

Leadership from:

  • 8 Audubon Youth Leaders

  • 4 College Corps members from CSU Dominguez Hills

  • 4 Hire LA interns

  • 1 mental health-focused student from CSULA

  • 84 Pasadena City College students joined field-based learning trips, helping us better understand the ecology of our sites.

  • We partnered with Academia Avance and CSULA to connect high school and college students to meaningful opportunities in conservation.

Community Programs that Bring Nature to Life

From bird walks to movie nights, our programs are designed to inspire joy, connection, and action.

  • 155 community members joined us for Bird Walks.

  • 222 hikers explored the park with our naturalist guides.

  • 369 people came together for Movie Nights under the stars — and more are on the way!

  • 1,879 people met through festivals and offsite events, thanks to our incredible partners.

Volunteer Spotlight: National Volunteer Month

April was National Volunteer Month, and we celebrated the heart of our Center — our volunteers. From nursery care to Salton Sea education, your dedication keeps our ecosystem thriving.

  • Over 2,800 volunteer hours logged in this fiscal year — and counting!

  • A special shoutout to our volunteers who joined us for a presentation on the Salton Sea, highlighting the importance of habitat work across California.

Looking Ahead

With summer just around the corner, exciting opportunities are on the horizon:

  • More habitat restoration days — our plants need extra care as temperatures rise!

  • Expanded Audubon Youth Leaders Program — now offered during the summer!

  • Community Movie Nights return — kicking off May 23 and continuing the 4th Friday of each summer month.

  • Los Nogales Nursery opening for weekend plant sales! In partnership with the Theodore Payne Foundation, we’re launching native plant sales soon — keep an eye out for more details!

Thank you for being part of our journey. Whether you’ve joined a hike, pulled a weed, or shared a post, your support makes this all possible.

With deep gratitude,
Evy
