As you read this email, California lawmakers are weighing a budget trailer bill proposal that would make dramatic changes to California’s bedrock environmental protections, protections that have long safeguarded birds, habitat, and communities from unbridled development. The proposed changes to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) would affect natural habitat, including areas that support endangered, threatened, or special-status species. These proposed changes could allow certain development projects, including those related to sprawl, industrial facilities, and fire management, to move forward without environmental review.
Please send an email to your legislator right now to say that you oppose these proposed changes to CEQA . CEQA has long been a valuable firewall protecting birds, wildlife, and habitat from harmful development projects. In recent years, there have been a number of improvements to CEQA to make sure it’s not standing in the way of important projects providing housing or economic benefits, and those efforts will continue. But this budget trailer bill proposal would significantly weaken the law, amounting to a major step back for environmental protections. Audubon California is standing alongside conservation and environmental organizations across the state in opposing this proposal, and we invite you to join us.
Please act today to urge your state legislators to reject harmful CEQA rollbacks and help protect the habitats birds and communities depend on. They need our voice now.
