Over the past year, Audubon Mid-Atlantic achieved major milestones across Pennsylvania and Maryland in support of Audubon’s 5-year Flight Plan to reverse bird declines. Staff secured key funding for climate resilience, supported passage of bird-protective legislation, and hosted events that brought communities together to celebrate our region’s natural resources. Highlights from 2025 include:
-
Coastal Restoration: The Coasts team completed the Marshes for Tomorrow technical report, a landscape-scale plan to restore 29,140 acres of Maryland’s salt marshes, protecting Saltmarsh Sparrow breeding habitat. Funded by USFWS and NFWF, the report has been incorporated into state and regional planning, with implementation beginning in 2026. A summary report is available here.
-
Forester Training and Endorsement Program: Audubon staff trained and endorsed fourteen foresters who were then connected with funding to create bird-friendly forest management plans for 9,394 acres of private forests, with another 2,564 acres implemented for improved habitat management.
-
Urban Forestry in Baltimore: Audubon, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, and partners restored degraded forest in Lakeland Park by removing invasive vines and installing bird-friendly habitat and began outreach and planning to replicate the project in Farring Baybrook Park.
-
Public Programming and Education: Audubon centers welcomed more than 10,000 visitors and delivered 150+ public programs. Discovery Center staff worked in three North Philadelphia elementary schools to deliver environmental education lessons for children grades 1 to 4, at no cost to the schools.
-
Philadelphia Pollinator Gardens: With the Philadelphia Pollinator Network, Audubon installed 6 native plant gardens, delivered 18 native planter boxes, and opened a free seed library at the Discovery Center. Work continues in 2026 with the Strawberry Mansion Community Development Corporation to develop a community-informed plan to create and restore green spaces that support birds and people.
