Camp Verde hosts Arizona’s most recently designated Important Bird Area (IBA), marking the third IBA within the world-renowned Verde Valley. A joint effort between Friends of the Verde River, Northern Arizona Audubon Society, and the Town of Camp Verde made the designation a reality. Residents voted to prioritize the designation in their town’s planning process, and hundreds of hours were committed by volunteers to conduct bird surveys and apply GIS mapping needed for the IBA application.
The Verde River is one of our state’s last perpetual flowing rivers, and supports a diversity of bird life, including the Western Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Lucy’s Warbler, and Bell’s Vireo. The IBA designation confirms not only the river’s importance to birds and other wildlife, but also its economic, recreational, and cultural importance to our state.

| River Pathways Summer Interns |
Max Ayala, Livia Hamel, and Iona Stevens have joined our field crew as this summer’s River Pathways interns! The three have been busy camping, hiking, and surveying with Audubon biologists for the federally threatened Western Yellow-billed Cuckoo.
River Pathways internships serve to connect youth to on-the-ground conservation while exposing them to career pathways in science and conservation. Thanks to APS Foundation, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Forest Service for supporting the River Pathways program. |
